"billionaires have long exerted influence on the news simply by own us media outlets"
Billionaires such as Rupert Murdoch and Michael Bloomberg are long time media moguls who have made their fortunes through their news businesses.
Billionaires own parts or several bits of America's influential national papers such as The Washington post, The Wall street Journal and New York Times (in addition to local papers, online publications and magazines.)
Michael Bloomberg, the richest of the media entrepreneur, returned after stepping down as mayor of new yok city. His network is worth $45.7 Billion.
Donald New-house and his brother Samuel are also another one of  highly influential billionaires as they own shares of Vanity Fair, Wired, The New York etc.

Personally, i believe these small number of people have way too much control over the media therefore they are able to project their own values and ideologies which may not represent the majority of the nation which is especially concerning when they own papers such as 'The Washington Post' which should be able to relate able and relevant to the average american.
