Blog task- Social media and surveillance

Blog task

Read ‘Somebody’s watching you: Social media and surveillance’ –MM52 p13. Our Media Magazine archive is here. Complete the following tasks on your MEST3 Exam blog:

1) Summarise the article in 50 words.
The article within the magazine talks about the idea of privacy whilst roaming the internet through the uses of sites such as 'Facebook'. This article definitely sets a negative tone as its speaks about government surveillance and access online to our online data for example when apps that use your 'location'.

2) Are you worried about companies tracking your online movement?
Companies like Amazon and Google use of tracing our online movement is more beneficial than harmful as stated within the article 'Data mining, getting information about users is essential to business on the internet. Even Retailers like Amazon use data to recommend products to us' therefore its less worrisome and has more pros than cons.

3) Are the questions over data and privacy small prices to pay for the possibilities provided by the internet?
These questions have been around since the birth of the internet and there have been more cons than pros due to the innate factor of the internet which is being free and available to everyone.
Lastly, there is a clear deduction of viewership with sites that make the switch from being a free platform to being priced such as Sound cloud.

4) Should governments be able to spy on our activity online? Where would you draw the line - social media? Private messaging conversations? Our phone photos and contacts?
Personally, i am aware and slightly weary about the depth of the government or authority figure's involvement to the online word, similar to the concerns of online based companies access to our privacies, however i also do understand the need for surveillance as the internet has become one of the most powerful tools within today's society.

5) Read this Guardian news story from last week on Harvard withdrawing offers due to offensive memes on Facebook. In your opinion, were Harvard right to rescind those offers?

I stand by Harvard for their decision to withdraw these students as those nasty memes do not represents the standards and beliefs held within province of Harvard. In additions, this would ruin the representation of Harvard if this outrageous situation was not handled well. Also the extremely offensive memes are highly disrespectful toward the other Latino descent members of Harvard such as one of the comments was calling the death of a Mexican youth as 'pinata time'.
