News institutions research

Blog task 1: News institutions research

Research the major players in terms of UK news providers and make notes in a detailed blog post. List companiespublications/channels/programmesownersstatistics and anything else you find relevant.

You must include all three platforms (print, broadcast, e-media) and both commercial and non-commercial institutions (e.g ITN/BBC).

Make sure you include at least FIVE different institutions across the three platforms. You may wish to use bullet points to cover the key information about each institution.

Blog task 2: The impact of Google

Read this article looking at the impact Google has had on the traditional newspaper business.

Answer the following questions:

1) Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?

"Craig Newmark started in his San Francisco apartment (and originally pitched to at least one newspaper, as I recall, only to be rejected) is often blamed for removing billions of dollars in classified advertising from the newspaper business, demolishing one of its key revenue pillars."

2) Find a statistic from the article that illustrates the decline of traditional news media.

adrev-600x423

  •  Print which has lost up to $60 billion
  • online newspaper advertisement has raised up $40 billion in revenue

3) Looking at the graph featured in the article, what period has seen the steepest decline in newspaper advertising revenue?

Clearly between between the years of 2000 and 2010 there is a steep decline in the revenue of newspaper advertising.

4) Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?
I strongly disagree as the google doesn't not own the 'internet' and is not the only engineering site available however it is the most strongest and comfortably the most dominate one.
The newspaper industry is dying out due to the the upcoming age of the new and digital media which serves it consumers easier and better whilst allowing them to be more engaged.

5) Read the comments below the article. Pick one comment you agree with and one you disagree with and explain your response to the comments in detail.

"You can’t single out Google just because it’s the largest digital company. Patch, for example, invested hundreds of millions into journalism in the US and continues to search for the model that will work going forward. There are many who are investing in the future of journalism."

I agree as i believe the importance of journalism and print is cultural needed and will not die out in the years to come and it is extremely unfair to single out google for the causes of the spike in the usage of the net .
Google and other engineering sites has forced these outlets to become more creative and innovative which is necessarily not a bad thing.

" I think the Internet is incredibly poorly designed. Rather than being free, everything on it should cost something in order to compensate creators."

We shouldnt have to pay for it because not every one can afford it and we already have enough bills to pay also we pay more than two dollars a month for less than a second of connectivity internet access is also used by many people in the world these days
