NDM: Marxism and Pluralism
1) To what extent do you agree with Alain de Botton's views on the News?
I heavily agree with the fact that the news is becoming more narrow-minded and any news which is outside of the mainstream is automatically sidelined and given less relevance.
However, Alain de Botton states how audiences are just concerned with the facts and fail to care about making an actual change. There is a distinction between news which is important and news which is popular, with the advances in technology, the nature of news has been altered.
2) How can you link Marxism and Hegemony to de Botton's criticisms of the News?
He argues that the news is the clearly under the influence of the upper class. they have the power to control all of the news and mantain it. He also argues that the audiences are quite mindless and passive to the news and don't challenge what they are been fed such as stated in the two step flow theory. In addition, This links into the idea of hegemony with how the upper class is entitled to choosing what the whole nation is seeing on tv and other new outlets . Lastly, there is still a lot of trust the consumers have for the institution as we do not often question the quality and accuracy of content and source presented to us. Unfortunately this allows for manipulation and space for 'fake news' has emerged in which people can generate false news to influence these passive audiences which again is lined to the hypodermic theory.
3) How could you use Pluralism and new technology to challenge de Botton's views on the News?
The news brings us new materials and how we interpret it is what makes the news popular. New technology has made celebrities become role models and the news "anoints" celebrities. Pluralism doesn't prompt audience to make change.

This article demonstrates how celebrity news is more popular than disasters going on in the world. for example the bbc becoming more mainstream and "clickbait" friendly.
