Link:   http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/42167249/why-celebrities-are-sharing-posts-about-slave-auctions It's after CNN released footage earlier this month in which sub-Saharan asylum seekers are seen being auctioned off as farm workers. The United Nations says it is "stepping up its work" to stop the slave trade happening.Thousands of people have signed a petition asking the UK government to take action too. In my opinion, this shows the one of the many perks of social media, things can become a global sensation within seconds which is necessary for cases like this as it is highly moral. The social media outrage and discontent with the situation means that organisations like the UN and etc have to work faster and better to resolve the situation.  Quotes- " Clara Amfo, Stefflon Don and Giggs are among those supporting a march to the Libyan Embassy in London on 9 December." Last week more than 150 migrants returned to the Ivory Coast, like 22-year-

NDM: Marxism and Pluralism

1) To what extent do you agree with Alain de Botton's views on the News? I  heavily agree with the fact that the news is becoming more narrow-minded and any news which is outside of the mainstream is automatically sidelined and given less relevance. However, Alain de Botton states how audiences are just concerned with the facts and fail to care about making an actual change. There is a distinction between news which is important and news which is popular, with the advances in technology,  the nature of news has been altered.  2) How can you link Marxism and Hegemony to de Botton's criticisms of the News? He argues that the  news  is the clearly under the influence of the upper class.  they  have the power to control all of the news and mantain it.  He also argues that the  audiences are quite mindless and passive to the news and don't challenge what they are been fed such as stated in the two step flow theory.  In addition, This  links into the ide

Gaia Pope death: Arrested family want police apology  Link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-42064624 Paul Elsey, 49, his mother Rosemary Dinch, 71, and her 19-year-old grandson, Nathan Elsey, were all arrested on suspicion of murder. They were questioned by detectives over the disappearance of 19-year-old Miss Pope, who went missing from Swanage, Dorset, on 7 November. Her body was found on Saturday in a field near the town. On Thursday, police discovered clothing belonging to Miss Pope on open land outside the town. The family members of the deceased girl seems to be infuriated as they think  that the  Dorset Police is treating her death as "unexplained pending toxicology results" however i think this is slightly an emotional response and that it seems that the police are trying their hardest to solve the case presented to them.

She complained to the film studio about the encounter, but says she was later "threatened by one of the star's representatives". The actress also recounted a second incident which she described as a "hotel room encounter with a top director". The allegations of sexual harassment surrounding Harvey Weinstein have had an impact beyond the movie industry as w omen in ad agencies are now telling their own stories of inappropriate behavior in the workplace but   so far, women are afraid to go public on those names for fear of losing their jobs

Bonus reading: Hegemony and the Hunger Games I've got some slightly off-topic reading to get you started. "Ikea makes a ad that makes my family feel good to be black and British https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/oct/27/ikea-advert-family-feel-good-black-british-racism-whitewashing This is the future … black women and girls seen in positive spaces with their own hair. The more of this sort of imagery we see in adverts, the more normal it will be for black women, like every other woman, to wear their own texture with pride.”  “Sadly, we have also received a small number of complaints from people who are unhappy with the ad – calling it racist for not featuring any white people. We were all genuinely shocked by these comments.” The absence of white people in the advert is not what appeals or appreciated but the inclusion of black people with a more positive and flattering representation  In the age of Brexit Britain, and  police brutality  our society seems to be more divided than ever so this advert is making bolder statement
